It's that time of the year again and I wanted to share with you my holiday card. This year I actually printed my card as physical postcards to send to my friends in the industry and family. It was certainly a learning experience and glad to see that printing access has become cheaper and cheaper since I left college. Overnightprints did a great job I have to say, I caught them during a postcard sale too. I've also created another blog dealing with all the illustration process so please check it out for a in-depth look at how I created this piece. Happy holidays everyone...

Concept: In a visual style mixture of what you could call Marko Djurdjevec meets James Jean with Mignola sensibilities and throw in a bit of The Umbrella Academy...The story is based on a personal story series of characters I have yet to actually flesh out or reveal on my blog. But I thought I could use the ideas from them as an illustration. Santa "Octo-Claus" creeps through the window and prepares to kidnap the innocent pure little lady. Just as our hero comes to the rescue, badass scythe and all...

It also acts as a walking tank that can wreck havoc in the city while digesting civilians and "producing" more enemies on the spot. Think sorta like the Alien Queen laying eggs everywhere. Another inspiration comes from the fluidly animated creatures from Miyazaki movies as well. You could imagine this monster creepily crawling down the street grabbing people up.

I wanted to work on a more darker serious tokusatsu sentai(power ranger) show pushing the genre maturely but keeping what makes it so appealing. This is pretty much my Watchmen meets Japanese super heroes. My first step is this piece setting the mood and emotion of my project. This one is a bit video-gamey with the "weak spots", I'm playing a bit too much RE5 and Dead Space maybe lol. But yeah, it would be a boss character for the good guys to battle. Went through many variations some with laser eyes shooting across, cutting tails, flipping compositions, some with burning trees and a more darker Michael Bay vibe. The concept of Hades in steampunk form returning home to the Underworld on his charitot along with Cerberus. The level of finish is no where near the competition of the usual CGchallenge finish but I felt i had to finish this for myself so I could move on to other things. I really like the direction it went with the cool under lit colors thanks due to the critiques from my art friends in real life. Previous incarnations of this was less focused in terms of lighting. Khang Le was there doing a demo on environment painting. Now, in a way i already knew most of the things he was trying to teach and point out. But just seeing him do a demo in his style and to see his work method was a real treat. He works just like Craig Mullins which is amazing. So, if it does remind you of some Khang elements thats probably why, I was contemplating adding in a few airballoon ships but that might be too much. Treat it as a homage?

I did this painting during the Thanksgiving weekend and randomly working on it here and there constantly having it up on my monitor. It's not quite at a finished level, but I'd say its a real tight thought out speed paint. At this point the weekends over and I don't think i want to work on it anymore. I think the real exercise in this one was just to get better at atmospheric perspective and composition.

I may go back and add more detail into this someday...soon.

Heres a painting i did this week with a lot of free time. I played around with different rendering techniques. The goal was to paint tightly, don't know if i succeeded. I blurred out a lot of parts of the body that wasn't quite important, though it gave the piece another effect entirely. I created a "freckle/skin tone" brush but used it very very subtley since i wanted her skin to be very soft and un-scathed, but i used it to break up the skin tones for a realistic feel. I managed to get a subsurface scattering effect on the skin in some areas with some PS layer/brush effects. The background was made with many various layers of strokes, painterly gesso like layers, and a paper texture to break up the area. For technique reference, i was mainly looking at LindaB's tutorials on rendering. I dont believe it turned out as much of like her work, shes just a master as what she does ^_^.
Overall, i think this was a good learning piece for me.
PS i used photo ref from characterdesign.com, and is kinda friends with the model from another forum site.

The idea of this piece is pretty basic, dark sinister person luring the innocent into his dark realm for who knows what purpose, i'll leave that to the viewer. I guess its kinda like Phantom of the Opera in a bit. I tried to add as much narrative to it as i could with the secondary character hiding behind the pillar cautiously spying on the two main figures.

Heres an illustration i did recently just for fun. My version of the iconic Tripod creature/alien. The creatures are somewhat insectoidbut also mechanical as well. The original composition was reversed. I tried have a flowing view path. Color selection was based on the star wars concepts for Mustafar planet.

Illustration depicts the Tripods reigning over the destroyed city and perhaps building digging underneath the rubble. Note, i did not follow the story of war of the worlds while painting this.
